Special Needs

How can we reach the unreachable? Some people have mental conditions or illnesses that perplex us. We don’t know how to talk with them or help them learn. We struggle to understand where they’re coming from. How do we get through and touch their hearts?

Even though we don’t know how to connect with them, God does. He created them and knows their inward parts. He understands their thoughts, motives, and why they do and say the things they do.

When their out-of-the-norm responses and actions baffle us, we need to look to God. We need to commune with the Holy Spirit and seek wisdom. We need to pray for enlightenment, connectivity, and relationship building, so that we can get through to them and speak to their hearts.

One thing that all humans need is love. By allowing the Holy Spirit to work in and through us with the power of God’s love, we can reach the hearts of all and speak the Word of God into their lives. By pouring God’s unconditional love on them, they will recognize the voice of God and respond.

It’s so easy to put these unique individuals into a box and expect them to act like all the others. But God did not design them for the usual, typical population. He designed them to be different, to be unique, and to be themselves. We cannot try to discipline them into like-mindedness when they aren’t hard-wired for commonality. We must meet them where they are and open our minds to a different way to go from there.

If we do not intercede with the love of God, we lose them. As they face continual punishment for who they are and what they do, they give up on themselves, on life, and go on a downward spiral to destruction.

We must intervene with the love of God and reach out to these special souls. When they taste and see that God is good, they can receive His gift of salvation. They can only do this if they tangibly see God working in and through us, so that they can experience His unconditional love firsthand. Only then will we be able to connect with them and affect their lives on earth and for all eternity.

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.” 1 John 4:7-9

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:9-13
